AI Unbundles PR Workflows

general-purpose AI tools like ChatGPT with deep research, browser control, and spreadsheet integrations are making easier to replicate without a dedicated PR platform

This points to a real shift in where PR software gets its moat. When a general AI tool can search the web, work across trusted sites, organize results in spreadsheets, and draft outreach in one flow, a large share of entry level PR work starts to look like a repeatable research process rather than a software category. That matters most for list building, first draft pitching, and basic reporting, which are the workflows that are easiest to unbundle from a dedicated seat.

  • OpenAI now positions ChatGPT deep research as a tool that can search the web, use connected apps, and produce cited reports. OpenAI also offers ChatGPT inside Excel and Google Sheets, which means a team can source contacts, structure outreach lists, score outlets, and update trackers without buying a separate lightweight PR tool.
  • Muck Rack still does more than a generic AI workflow. Its product ties pitching to a journalist database, coverage monitoring, and pitch placement detection, where the system automatically matches sent outreach to resulting articles using language and entity signals. That kind of closed loop workflow is harder to rebuild from scratch in a chat interface.
  • Competition below the high end is already moving this way. Semrush markets its AI PR Toolkit around finding media contacts, building lists, sending pitches, tracking opens, and monitoring coverage, and it folds those tasks into a broader marketing stack. That is a sign that PR software is being pulled toward bundled, lower priced, AI assisted workflows.

The next phase is a split market. Higher end PR teams will keep paying for proprietary data, workflow automation, and measurement that connects outreach to outcomes. Lower tiers will face mounting pressure as AI tools and adjacent marketing platforms make basic PR execution cheap, flexible, and good enough for many teams.
