Agile Robots
Agile Robots owns a key bottleneck in robot AI development, because many of the teams building general purpose manipulation models are collecting data and testing policies on Franka arms that sit inside its portfolio. In practice, that means researchers teleoperate the same hardware, record camera feeds, joint states, and force data, then use those logs to train models that learn grasping, drawer opening, tool use, and other fine motor tasks.

DROID was built around a standardized Franka Panda setup, with 76k trajectories gathered across hundreds of scenes and tasks. A shared hardware stack matters because it makes demonstrations easier to combine into one training corpus instead of a patchwork of incompatible robot data.

Open X-Embodiment aggregates datasets across 22 robot embodiments, and the published materials explicitly include Franka as one of the major platforms. That puts Agile Robots hardware inside one of the main data pipes feeding modern vision language action research.

This is different from most industrial robot vendors, which mainly ship arms for factory deployment, not for frontier model training. By acquiring Franka Emika in 2023, Agile Robots gained a research installed base that can influence what data gets collected, which control interfaces become standard, and where new models are first evaluated.
The next step is turning research standard status into a commercial advantage. If robot labs keep training on Franka based systems, Agile Robots is well placed to sell the bridge from dataset collection to real factory deployment, using its research arms, industrial cobots, hands, and software stack as one continuous path from lab demo to production cell.
