Kraken Vertically Integrates US Derivatives

Diving deeper into

Kraken

Company Report
Kraken operates redundant regulated derivatives infrastructure targeting the multi-trillion-dollar U.S. derivatives market.

Kraken is no longer just adding a derivatives product, it is assembling the legal plumbing needed to control the full trade lifecycle in the U.S. Bitnomial brings the three CFTC licenses needed to list, clear, and intermediate digital asset derivatives, while Small Exchange adds another DCM and NinjaTrader adds an FCM tied to an existing futures user base. That redundancy matters because it gives Kraken multiple regulated paths to launch contracts, clear risk, and distribute them to U.S. traders.1 2 3 4 5

  • Each license does a different job. A DCM lists the contract, a DCO clears it after the trade, and an FCM holds customer collateral and routes orders. Bitnomial already has the full set, which means Kraken can own more of the economics and workflow instead of only embedding someone else’s futures feed.3 6
  • Kraken had already started building this stack before Bitnomial. Kraken Derivatives US launched in July 2025 with CME crypto futures inside Kraken Pro through NinjaTrader, then Small Exchange added a CFTC licensed DCM in October 2025. Bitnomial turns that patchwork into a vertically integrated onshore venue.2 4 5
  • CF Benchmarks gives Kraken influence one layer deeper, at the pricing benchmark level. CME says its Solana and XRP futures settle against CME CF reference rates, and CF Benchmarks is part of Kraken’s ecosystem. That links Kraken to both the trading venue and the reference data used to settle regulated contracts.1 7 8 9

The next step is a U.S. product set that looks more like a full futures broker and exchange than a crypto app with an add on tab. With listing, clearing, brokerage, benchmark data, and spot liquidity under one roof, Kraken is positioned to capture more institutional derivatives flow as regulated crypto markets move onshore.1 2 3 4 5 7 8 9
