Douyin Search Siphons Kuaishou and Baidu
ByteDance
Search turns Douyin from a place people stumble into videos into a place they go with intent, and that makes each visit worth more. A user who types a product, restaurant, outfit, or travel query is signaling what they want right now, which lets Douyin show more targeted ads, route them into merchant pages, and keep discovery and checkout inside ByteDance’s own app. That is a more direct monetization loop than feed viewing alone, and it pulls commercial search behavior away from both Kuaishou and Baidu.1 2 4 5
- Douyin already had a big lead in search scale inside short video. Internal research pegged it at about 20 billion monthly searches, roughly 6x Kuaishou and about 1 sixth of Baidu. That gap matters because search improves with more queries, more content, and more advertiser demand, which compounds the leader’s advantage.1
- The monetization path is concrete. Douyin added in app product search, then built more of its own commerce stack around merchant listings, short videos, livestreams, and checkout. When someone searches for sneakers or skincare, ByteDance can sell the ad, rank the content, and take the transaction, instead of just selling brand awareness higher up the funnel.4 5
- Kuaishou can grow search too, but its positioning is weaker because commercial demand follows where users start their discovery. Kuaishou has reported strong e-commerce scale, yet Douyin’s commerce machine is larger, and newer rivals like Xiaohongshu are also taking search behavior by turning lifestyle posts into shopping queries, which puts more pressure on both Kuaishou and Baidu.2 3 6
The next phase is Douyin behaving less like a video app and more like China’s default discovery layer for buying and local intent. If that continues, ByteDance captures more of the high value searches that used to belong to classic search engines, while Kuaishou is forced to defend lower intent entertainment traffic where monetization is structurally weaker.3 4 5 6
