Cursor profitable on enterprise accounts

Cursor

Company Report
large-enterprise accounts are gross-margin positive while individual developer accounts remain loss-making.

This split shows that Cursor is no longer mainly a prosumer SaaS app, it is becoming an enterprise software company that uses self serve developers as top of funnel. Big teams buy annual seats, admin controls, security review, audit logs, and higher usage commitments, which spreads model costs over larger contracts. Individual plans still carry heavy inference expense from agentic coding, but with much lower revenue per user.1 2 3 4

  • Cursor had already started moving upmarket by April 2025, building a sales team and shifting revenue mix away from monthly individual subscriptions toward yearly contracts. That matters because enterprise buyers are less price sensitive, buy more seats at once, and use features that justify higher pricing.2 4
  • The cost side changed too. Cursor improved margins by routing work to cheaper models and increasing use of its proprietary Composer model. That is the basic unit economics lever in AI coding, charge for the workflow layer while lowering the cost of each edit, completion, and agent run underneath.1 4
  • This is also a market pattern, not just a Cursor pattern. Replit likewise grew from a broad developer product into a higher revenue business by pushing into business and enterprise use cases. Across AI coding, the hardest segment is the power individual user who expects heavy usage on a low monthly price.3 5

The next step is more packaging and pricing built around teams, not solo coders. Expect more admin and security features, more usage based billing for agents, and more proprietary model work to make enterprise contracts increasingly profitable while narrowing losses on the long tail of individual developer accounts.1 2 4
