Helsing has moved aggressively to vertically integrate, acquiring Grob Aircraft SE (~275 employees, announced June 2025) to bring airframe manufacturing in-house and accelerate production of autonomous aerial systems.

This acquisition shows Helsing is no longer trying to be only the AI layer, it is trying to control the full path from autonomy software to finished aircraft. Owning Grob gives Helsing a factory, composites know how, and an established aerospace workforce of around 275 people, which matters because military buyers do not just want clever software, they want systems that can actually be built in volume, upgraded, and delivered on schedule.

  • CA-1 Europa makes the logic concrete. Helsing is pairing its Centaur autonomy stack with Grob airframe design and manufacturing in the 3 to 5 ton class, aiming for a production UCAV within four years. That turns Helsing from a software supplier into a prime candidate for complete autonomous aircraft programs.
  • This follows the same pattern across domains. Helsing first partnered with Blue Ocean on maritime autonomy in April 2025, then moved to acquire it in October 2025 so underwater vehicles, like aircraft, could be built with Helsing AI and in house production under one roof.
  • European peers are also moving toward vertical integration, but from the opposite direction. Quantum Systems and Stark Defence started with drone hardware and pulled autonomy software in through acquisitions and in house development. Helsing is starting with battlefield AI, then buying manufacturing to own the platform itself.

The next step is a European defense company that sells not just decision software, but complete autonomous fleets across air, sea, and eventually space. If Helsing executes, vertical integration will let it move faster from demo to procurement, bundle software with hardware, and become harder for primes to displace because it will control both the brain and the body of the system.
