OpenAI lacks browser and OS control
OpenAI
The core gap is that Google can turn AI into a default behavior at the device and browser layer, while OpenAI still has to win an active visit to ChatGPT. Google can ship Gemini through Chrome and Android updates, place it next to search, tabs, forms, and system actions, and bundle it into products already used by billions. OpenAI has enormous direct reach, with 1.2 billion weekly ChatGPT users and a fast growing ads business, but that is still app level distribution rather than operating system level control.1 2 3 4 5 6
- Browser control matters because the browser sees intent in real time. In Chrome on Android, Gemini can read the page, summarize it, transform it, or complete tasks like parking reservations and order changes without making the user leave the browsing flow.2 3
- Operating system control matters because Android is a built in launch surface. Google has framed Android as an intelligence layer and has said Gemini capabilities are being brought to billions of Android users, which gives it a low cost path to mass AI distribution.4 6
- OpenAI has countered with direct consumer scale instead of platform ownership. ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people each week and ads hit a $1 billion annualized run rate by August 31, 2026, which proves strong standalone demand but not control over the default interface where users start tasks.1 5
This pushes the market toward a fight over default surfaces. If OpenAI wants to match Google’s structural advantage, it has to keep turning ChatGPT into a destination people open on purpose, or buy and partner its way into browsers, devices, and workflow entry points that reduce dependence on voluntary app opens.1 2 3 4 5 6
