Meta’s real advantage in AI has been infrastructure influence, not just model quality. Long before Llama became a public developer brand, Meta had already shaped how the field builds and ships models through PyTorch, then reinforced that position by releasing research artifacts like CICERO and Segment Anything that other teams could directly adopt, benchmark against, or build on. Llama mattered because it turned that quiet research credibility into a visible open model distribution strategy.

  • PyTorch is the clearest example. Meta helped start it in 2016, and it later became a Linux Foundation project as usage spread far beyond Meta. That gave Meta influence over the default toolkit many labs and startups use to train and fine tune models, even when those companies compete with Meta directly.
  • CICERO and Segment Anything show the same pattern in research. CICERO demonstrated a system that could handle messy human negotiation in Diplomacy, and Segment Anything gave developers a ready made way to click on an image and cut out any object. These were practical building blocks, not just papers.
  • Llama changed perception because it moved Meta from supplying picks and shovels to supplying the model itself. Once developers could download, fine tune, and host a strong open model, companies like Perplexity, Together AI, and many Hugging Face users had a real alternative to paying closed model APIs for every request.

The next phase is Meta using open releases to make its stack the default layer beneath the AI economy. If more developers standardize on Meta models, tooling, and research primitives, the company does not need to own every end application to shape pricing, distribution, and product direction across the market.
