Navan Creates Finance Switching Costs
Navan
The real moat is not travel booking, it is becoming the system that decides whether spend is allowed, how it is paid, and how it lands in the ledger. Once Navan is wired into a company’s card feeds, policy rules, and accounting sync, finance teams stop doing month end cleanup by hand. Navan says over 70% of card transactions needed zero manual intervention, and its BYO card model has already processed more than $1B since January 2024.1 2 3
- The lock in comes from workflow depth. Employees book inside policy because out of policy options are suppressed in search, then card charges are captured, categorized, and pushed into ERP and general ledger systems automatically. That means replacing Navan is not swapping a booking tool, it is rebuilding the company’s travel payment and close process.1
- Navan is also lowering adoption friction. Navan Connect lets companies keep incumbent bank and card relationships while still getting automated expense controls, with support for more than 250 banks and 100 currencies. The American Express Sync launch in July 2025 extended that model to Amex virtual cards, which makes the software easier to adopt without a card migration.1 3 4
- This is where Navan differs from adjacent rivals. TravelPerk has policy controls and travel workflow depth, but has historically needed more third party expense infrastructure. Ramp and Brex start from the card and spend side, then add travel. BrexPay for Navan shows the practical middle ground, enterprises can keep a best of breed card stack and still use Navan as the operating layer for travel payments and reconciliation.1 2 5 6
The market is heading toward finance systems that win by owning the full approval to payment to accounting loop, even when the underlying card comes from someone else. Navan’s advantage will grow if it keeps turning travel bookings into structured payment data and policy enforcement, because that makes the product harder to remove as customers scale globally and split buying decisions across travel, card, and controllership teams.1 2 4 6
