Sportsbooks and Exchanges Threaten Polymarket
Polymarket
Prediction markets stopped being a niche crypto corner and became a distribution fight. Polymarket now faces rivals that already own regulated rails, league relationships, and millions of betting users. Kalshi proved that sports can drive week to week leadership, while DraftKings and CME FanDuel moved in with licensed market infrastructure that lets them add prediction contracts next to products customers already use every day.1 2 3 4 5 6 7
- Kalshi changed the category from politics spikes to everyday sports habit. Internal research shows Kalshi sports volume nearing $1B per week in late 2025, with sports making up most activity, which pulled prediction markets into direct competition with sportsbooks rather than other crypto apps.1 2 3
- The incumbents entering are not starting from zero. DraftKings bought Railbird in October 2025 to get a federally licensed exchange, and CME and FanDuel formed FanDuel Predicts in December 2025 to list event contracts through existing regulated market infrastructure.4 5 6
- League partnerships also stopped being a clean edge. NHL named both Kalshi and Polymarket official prediction market partners in October 2025, and MLB gave Polymarket an exclusive exchange partnership in March 2026, which means official data and logos are now becoming table stakes rather than a moat.7 8
The next phase looks less like a winner take all crypto marketplace and more like a crowded market where distribution and compliance decide share. Polymarket can still win by keeping liquidity deepest and prices cheapest, but the bar is now competing against sportsbook apps and exchange operators that can cross sell prediction contracts at massive scale.4 5 6 7 8
