Consensys Owns Wallet and Developer Pipe

Diving deeper into

Consensys

Company Report
two have really broken out to become fundamental pieces of technology in the crypto space: MetaMask and Infura.

The breakout of MetaMask and Infura shows that Consensys won the two chokepoints that matter most in crypto, the user wallet and the developer pipe into the chain. MetaMask is where users hold assets and approve transactions. Infura is the service many apps use so they do not have to run their own blockchain nodes. Together they sit in the path of both demand and supply across Ethereum based crypto activity.

  • MetaMask became the default front door for Ethereum apps by turning a crypto wallet into a simple browser extension and mobile app. That mattered because users could click connect on OpenSea, Uniswap, or any other dapp, then sign with the same wallet instead of juggling separate desktop software.
  • Infura became fundamental by abstracting away node operations. A developer building an NFT app, exchange, or wallet can send API calls to Infura instead of syncing Ethereum, handling upgrades, or managing servers. That utility became visible in November 2020, when an Infura outage disrupted withdrawals at major exchanges and affected wallet balances.
  • This position is valuable, but contested. QuickNode described the market as one where switching between providers is relatively easy unless a customer uses custom APIs, and competitors like Alchemy scaled aggressively with a $10.2B valuation in 2022. That means the moat is built less on lock in and more on being the default workflow and adding better tools faster.

The next phase is turning that distribution into more monetization layers. MetaMask is adding higher value trading flows, while infrastructure providers race to offer faster performance, more chains, and more packaged APIs. The company that controls both the wallet where users click approve and the backend developers depend on starts with a strong advantage as crypto usage broadens.
