Coinbase is harder to displace than a normal exchange because two of the stickiest profit pools in crypto sit outside spot trading. Base gives Coinbase a way to earn from developers and onchain activity, while ETF custody and prime services put it inside the daily operating stack of asset managers. That means customers are not just coming to trade, they are building on Coinbase rails or parking assets with Coinbase as regulated infrastructure.

  • Base extends Coinbase from broker into infrastructure. Developers using embedded wallets and wallet tools can plug directly into Coinbase liquidity and Base, which makes Coinbase useful even when no one is trading on the retail app. That broadens revenue beyond transaction fees and keeps more activity inside its own network.
  • ETF custody is sticky because moving a fund custodian is operationally heavy and tightly regulated. Coinbase said 9 of the 11 SEC approved spot Bitcoin ETFs in 2024 partnered with it, and several ETF filings describe Coinbase Custody and Coinbase prime brokerage handling safekeeping, trading support, and settlement.
  • This is the clean contrast with Binance. Binance still dominates global trading volume, but its institutional roadmap points toward building segregated custody and prime brokerage to compete with Coinbase Prime, which shows where the highest value part of the market is shifting, from matching trades to owning regulated workflows around them.

Going forward, the winners in centralized exchange will look more like financial infrastructure companies than trading venues. Coinbase is already there. If Base keeps attracting developers and ETF custody keeps concentrating with a small set of qualified providers, Coinbase's advantage compounds as every new fund, app, and institution adds another reason to stay inside the same stack.
