Partnerships lead at Skydio on where value accrues in the drone stack
5G turns drones from a one time hardware sale into a recurring connectivity business for carriers. Once a drone is flown beyond the operator’s direct radio range, the carrier can sell a higher value plan for command, video, and remote operations, and the drone vendor can bundle that connection into software products like remote piloting and dock based workflows. That is why telcos care most when drones shift from local inspection tools to always connected fleet infrastructure.

The revenue logic is simple. A normal drone sold for local use talks to a handheld controller over short range radio. A 5G connected drone can be launched on site and handed to a remote pilot hundreds of miles away, which creates an ongoing need for cellular service, not just the aircraft purchase.

This works best in high value use cases, not hobby flying. Skydio ties cellular connectivity to Remote Flight Deck, DFR Command, and dock workflows for public safety, utilities, and infrastructure inspection, where customers pay for uptime, live video, and remote coverage. Those buyers tolerate much richer data plans than consumers do.

The bigger prize for carriers is not distributing drones as hardware. It is becoming the network layer inside remote operations. BT shows the more ambitious version, using drones first on its own towers and then as a service for outside inspections. That moves the telco from selling bandwidth to selling a full workflow.
As BVLOS rules normalize, drone fleets will look more like connected field equipment and less like standalone devices. That shifts value toward the companies that own the always on link, the remote operations software, and the service workflow around it. Carriers that pair connectivity with managed drone operations will capture the most durable share of that stack.
