Task-Oriented Mortgage System of Record

Diving deeper into

Mike Yu, CEO of Vesta, on building a new system of record for the mortgage industry

UI/UX is not the reason that some finance institution makes a very expensive, seven or eight-figure decision to switch their system of record.

This kind of switch only happens when the new system changes how work gets done at the core of the factory. In mortgage, the expensive part is not screens, it is that the same loan gets checked, rechecked, and handed across processors, underwriters, closers, and QC teams because the system treats the whole loan file as one giant blob. Vesta is trying to break that blob into tasks, rules, and machine readable workflows that software can route, verify, and complete with less human judgment.

  • Vesta describes the old LOS model as human driven, where staff read a loan file, decide what documents are missing, chase borrowers, and repeat steps across teams. Its product reframes the unit of work from one loan file to smaller tasks and rules, so software can coordinate the process instead of relying on each employee's memory.
  • That is why buyers tolerate a huge implementation project. Replacing a system of record means retraining users, reconfiguring workflows, and often running the old and new systems in parallel while the old pipeline drains over roughly a loan cycle. A prettier front end helps adoption, but it does not justify that level of operational disruption on its own.
  • The broader market is moving toward modular mortgage software, not one giant suite. ICE Encompass exposes partner APIs and a large integration network, Snapdocs plugs into LOS and POS systems for closing, and Vesta positions itself as the orchestration layer in the middle, where lenders can connect best of breed tools without being trapped inside one vendor's workflow.

The next winners in mortgage infrastructure will be the systems that turn lending teams from document chasers into exception managers. As lenders add AI, verification, pricing, and closing tools, the system of record that best structures work into clean tasks and integrations will become the control point for the stack, and capture the most durable share of workflow and budget.
