Compounding Monetization from ID.me Wallets

ID.me

Company Report
highlighting the compounding effect of credential reuse on monetization.

Credential reuse turns identity verification from a one time service into a compounding transaction network. ID.me gets paid when an agency or brand accepts a wallet, but the hard work and cost of proving the person often happened earlier in another workflow. That means each additional relying party can monetize an existing verified user base with less user friction, better conversion, and lower incremental verification cost than starting from scratch every time.1

  • The product flow is concrete. A user uploads an ID, takes a selfie, clears liveness and other checks once, then reuses that credential across federal portals, state sites, healthcare logins, and merchant checkouts. In 2024, 20.4 million new wallets supported 409 million authenticated logins, which shows usage growing much faster than new user creation.1
  • The monetization loop spans segments. Government and large institutions fund the expensive initial proofing under multi year contracts and compliance requirements. Brands then pay for verified attributes like age, student, military, or veteran status, so the same wallet can generate revenue again in commerce without repeating the full proofing flow.1
  • That is the core difference versus API first auth vendors like WorkOS. WorkOS sells developer tools for app login, SSO, and directory sync, where each customer mainly pays for software embedded in its own product. ID.me is building a shared consumer credential layer, so network density across customers matters more than seats or software modules.1 2

The next phase is to add more regulated checks that can ride on the same wallet, especially age, healthcare access, provider credentialing, and workforce benefits. If more high stakes workflows accept the credential, ID.me moves further from selling isolated verifications and closer to operating reusable trust infrastructure with expanding revenue per verified user.1
