Kalshi's Exchange-Like Scale Advantage

Kalshi

Company Report
the exchange benefits from near-zero marginal costs on incremental trading volume

The core advantage is that Kalshi can keep adding traders and bets without adding much cost per trade, so each new dollar of volume falls heavily to gross profit. The expensive part is building the regulated machine upfront, licenses, surveillance, market making support, clearing, and risk controls. Once that exists, matching one more order is mostly software work, which is why exchange businesses can scale much faster than headcount.1 2 3

  • Kalshi now looks more like exchange infrastructure than a sportsbook. Sports became roughly 80% of volume, June 2026 volume reached about $30B, and annualized revenue reached about $3.5B, showing how fixed infrastructure can support huge bursts of activity around events like the World Cup.3 1
  • Owning clearing makes the unit economics better. Kalshi Klear lets Kalshi keep settlement and collateral workflows in house instead of paying outside clearing providers, which lowers per trade processing friction and gives tighter control over margin, defaults, and cash sitting on platform.1 2
  • This is also why volume matters more than app ownership. Prediction market infrastructure providers win by being the place orders ultimately clear, even if the user comes through Robinhood, Coinbase, or another front end. More routed flow improves liquidity, and better liquidity pulls in more traders and market makers.2 3

From here, the race is to turn scale into a moat. The biggest platforms will keep pushing for more distribution, more liquidity, and more in house infrastructure, because in exchange markets the operator with the deepest books and lowest real cost to clear volume can cut fees, absorb shocks, and still widen profit faster than smaller rivals.2 1 3
