Multi-day storage value mismatch

Diving deeper into

Form Energy

Company Report
Multi-day storage creates most of its value by preventing rare reliability failures and deferring transmission investments, but many electricity markets primarily compensate frequent energy and ancillary-service transactions

The hard part of Form Energy’s business is not just building cheap iron air batteries, it is getting paid for the exact problem they solve. A utility gets the biggest benefit when a battery can sit mostly idle, then cover a multi day outage risk or avoid spending billions on a new wire upgrade, but wholesale power markets still pay most cleanly for things batteries do every day, like buying low cost power, selling during peaks, and providing fast grid balancing services.

  • In markets like ERCOT, storage already participates in energy and ancillary services, and ERCOT has said those price signals do not currently justify investing in duration beyond roughly 2 to 4 hours. That is good for lithium ion, but weak for a 100 hour system whose value shows up in rare stress events.
  • The missing payment stream is reliability and wires deferral. DOE identifies long duration storage’s strongest use cases as localized reliability, resilience, and transmission and distribution deferral in congested areas where upgrades are slow or expensive. Those benefits often sit with utilities and regulators, not in a daily merchant battery trading stack.
  • That pushes Form toward bespoke contracts instead of pure market merchant economics. Form’s backlog includes utility deals and a 12 GWh strategic capacity agreement with Crusoe, which fits a world where buyers are purchasing assured multi day coverage for a specific site or planning problem, not just chasing hourly spread revenue.

The market is moving toward duration aware rules, but slowly. As grid operators add accreditation methods tied to actual reliability contribution and as utilities use storage more explicitly as a substitute for peakers and local transmission upgrades, long duration storage should shift from special procurement to a standard grid planning tool. That transition is what will determine how large Form’s real market becomes.
