This opens a second demand side to the ad business

Instacart is turning ads from a brand tax on search placement into a full retail growth product, which makes the ad business larger and stickier. Until now, most ad dollars came from CPG brands paying to win shelf space inside search and browse. By letting grocers buy their own promotions, category boosts, and off platform campaigns, Instacart starts selling demand generation to the stores themselves, not just to the brands sold in those stores.1 2 3 4

  • The new retailer tools are built around concrete merchant goals. A grocer can fund a Spend X, Save Y offer, promote a seasonal category, or run an ad on Meta, then see basket redemptions and new to banner growth in the same system. That is closer to trade promotion software plus ad buying than a standard sponsored listing business.1 3 5
  • This matters because Instacart already owns the shopping interface and the measurement loop. It can see what a shopper searched for, what store they chose, what went into the basket, and whether a promotion changed the order. That closed loop has already supported a $1B plus ads and other revenue line, giving retailers a ready made performance channel instead of building one from scratch.1 2 4
  • The comparable shift in retail media is from one sided seller demand to two sided marketplace demand. Mirakl Ads extends ad inventory to marketplace sellers, and Bluecore helps retailers turn first party shopping data into off site spend. Instacart is applying the same logic in grocery, but with the added advantage of checkout level purchase data and retailer storefront control.6 7

The next step is a denser ad marketplace where brands, retailers, and eventually creators all compete to shape the same shopping session. As Instacart adds more curated placements like shoppable video and retailer funded moments, advertising becomes less of a side monetization layer and more of the operating system for how grocery demand gets created and measured.1 2 8
