Benchling's Move Into Lab Execution
Lila Sciences
Benchling matters here because it already owns the data spine inside many large biopharma labs, and moving from recording experiments to triggering and analyzing them would let it sell deeper into the same budgets Lila wants. Today Benchling is where scientists design sequences, log notebook entries, register samples, manage inventory, and hand work across teams. Its newer automation, model hub, and orchestration pieces show a path from being the place where work is documented to the place where lab work actually gets launched and routed.1 3 4 5
- Benchling already has enterprise distribution. It serves more than half of the top 50 global biopharma companies, had about 1,200 customers by May 2024, and grew ARR to $210M. That installed base means any move into execution starts inside accounts where procurement, security review, and scientist training are already done.1
- The product is edging into active lab control. Benchling now supports workflow modules, native Python and R execution, integrations with HighRes workcells, and automation flows that connect protocol execution to analyzed results. It also added ReSync Bio and Sphinx Bio teams to extend into experiment orchestration and real time analysis across the design, make, test, analyze loop.3 4
- Benchling and Lila still approach the lab from opposite ends. Lila sells a closed loop service and infrastructure stack that generates hypotheses, runs robotic experiments, and decides the next step inside its own AI Science Factory. Benchling is more modular, letting customers keep their own instruments, choose outside models like Lilly TuneLab, and add orchestration on top of an existing digital lab footprint.5 6 7
If Benchling keeps adding execution, the center of gravity in enterprise R&D could shift toward software that coordinates a customer’s existing lab rather than a fully outsourced autonomous lab stack. That would make the key fight less about who has the best model alone, and more about who becomes the daily operating layer where experiments, instruments, data, and AI agents all meet.5 6 7
