Agent Computers as a Service

Diving deeper into

Daytona

Company Report
Buyers compare isolation, retained state, supported software, integration work and the total cost of keeping environments available, rather than simply whether a provider can run a Python script.

This buying decision is really about whether the sandbox behaves like a real computer that can stay warm between agent steps, not a one shot code runner. Daytona is pushing toward long lived environments with filesystem persistence by default, optional memory persistence for VM sandboxes, and support for Linux, Windows, macOS, and GPU machines. That matters because teams are usually running install heavy workflows, background processes, browsers, and per user workspaces, where restart time and re integration work become part of the product cost.1 2 3 4 5

  • Isolation is not just a check box. Daytona says each sandbox gets its own kernel, filesystem, network stack, and dedicated compute. E2B emphasizes Firecracker microVM isolation and per sandbox network controls. For buyers running untrusted model generated code, the question is what can escape, what can phone home, and how much policy control exists by default.2 6 7
  • Retained state changes the user experience. Daytona supports stopped sandboxes that keep files, paused VM sandboxes that keep memory, persistent shells, and hot or cold snapshots. E2B highlights pause and resume with memory intact plus snapshot based forking. This is the difference between reopening a working dev box and rebooting a fresh script runner every time.1 4 6
  • Integration work and total cost often decide the winner. E2B leans into easy framework integration, including OpenAI Agents SDK support and deployment choices across managed cloud, BYOC, and self hosted runtime. Modal offers persistence through volumes and snapshots, but as part of a broader compute platform. Teams already on an existing cloud stack may accept less specialization to avoid adding another control plane.8 9 10 11 12

This market is heading toward full agent computers as a service. The providers that win will be the ones that make long lived state, strong isolation, and framework level integration feel automatic, while driving standby and persistence costs low enough that keeping thousands of agent environments available becomes practical.3 5 8 10
