Redwood Materials dual revenue cycle

Diving deeper into

Redwood Materials

Company Report
This adds a second monetization cycle alongside the company’s core recycling, refining, and materials sales.

Redwood is turning one battery input into two separate revenue events, which makes its feedstock more valuable than it is for a pure recycler. A healthy EV pack can first be sold as storage capacity through Redwood Energy, then later come back for mineral recovery and sale as lithium, nickel, cobalt, copper, and battery materials. That lets Redwood earn from energy value first and commodity value later, while using the same OEM battery relationships to source both businesses.1 2 3 4 5

  • The second cycle is not theoretical. Redwood launched Redwood Energy in 2025, built a 12 MW, 63 MWh second life battery microgrid for Crusoe in under four months, and later expanded that deployment after reporting 99.2% uptime. That shows reused packs can be sold as infrastructure, not just shredded for metals.2 4 5
  • This creates an advantage over specialists on either side. Pure repurposers like Moment Energy mainly make money once, by rebuilding packs into storage systems. Traditional recyclers mainly make money once, by extracting and selling materials. Redwood can choose pack by pack whether immediate reuse or immediate recycling is worth more, then still recycle the pack later.5 6 7
  • The model also fits Redwood’s actual supply. Redwood says it processes more than 20 GWh of batteries a year and recovers more than 95% of critical minerals. At that scale, even routing a subset of better quality packs into storage gives Redwood a large pool of assets that can serve data centers, factories, and other power constrained sites before entering the refining stream.1 3 7

The next step is for Redwood to become less like a recycler with an extra product and more like a battery lifecycle platform. If AI data centers, factories, and automakers keep buying fast deployable storage, Redwood can capture margin at collection, repurposing, power system deployment, and final mineral recovery, with each installed system feeding future recycling volume back into the core business.2 4 5 7
