Primary ticketing turns StubHub from a fee collector into a software and distribution partner, which raises margin because the expensive part of the machine is already built. StubHub already pays to attract buyers, ranks listings, recommends prices, and clears checkout for more than 40 million annual ticket transactions. When a venue or league feeds original inventory into that same flow, StubHub can monetize the sale without sharing economics with a third party seller, and can layer on pricing, placement, and sponsorship revenue around the same demand.

  • The underlying cost logic is simple. In secondary, StubHub monetizes a transaction between a buyer and an outside seller, with about 20% take on GMS. In direct issuance, it uses the same search, pricing, checkout, and fulfillment stack, but skips the seller side commission model that limits margin expansion.
  • Primary also fixes a structural weakness. Ticketmaster and AXS win by controlling venue relationships first, then capturing resale later. StubHub’s MLB deal and newer direct issuance partnerships show it is starting to compete for the original inventory layer, not just the resale demand that appears after others already own the fan relationship.
  • This is especially valuable for unsold inventory. A promoter with empty seats close to game day can use StubHub’s existing audience, pricing recommendations, and alerts to move tickets without building separate marketing pipes. That makes StubHub useful not only as a marketplace, but as a yield management channel for rights holders.

If direct issuance keeps scaling, StubHub can look less like a pure resale exchange and more like a full stack ticketing network. That would widen margins, deepen control over supply, and create room to bundle ads, data, and dynamic pricing into primary deals, which is how ticketing platforms become much harder to displace.
