FirstClub premium niche squeeze

Diving deeper into

FirstClub

Company Report
If these incumbents become good enough on fresh quality and clean-label trust, FirstClub risks being constrained to a subscale premium niche rather than a distinct category.

The real risk is that fresh trust stops being a category wedge and becomes just another filter inside a much bigger quick commerce app. FirstClub is built around careful produce selection, cleaner packaged food, and higher basket quality, but Blinkit, Instamart, and Zepto already have the dark store density, larger assortments, and membership bundles to copy those features and spread the cost across millions more orders.

  • Instamart reached 1,143 dark stores across 129 cities in Q4 FY26, while Blinkit says it has 2,200 plus stores across 200 plus cities. That scale matters because premium produce trials, larger stores, and private labels can be tested inside an existing network instead of needing a standalone business to carry the overhead.
  • The incumbents are moving directly into the same customer promise. Instamart has expanded store size and assortment, and FirstClub notes Nectr and Noice as moves into premium produce and clean label. Zepto has piloted Real Lens, which shows timestamped photos of fresh produce from the nearest store, tackling the exact trust gap that makes people pay up for curation.
  • This is a classic premium niche squeeze. In online grocery, fresh produce is valuable but operationally hard because storage, spoilage, and precision picking all raise costs. If large platforms get good enough on quality, most households will choose one app for staples, top ups, and premium fruit rather than maintain a separate specialist relationship.

The path forward is for premium grocery specialists to turn taste and trust into habit before the majors fully close the gap. That usually means deeper sourcing relationships, stronger own brand penetration, and enough repeat behavior that the service becomes a planned weekly basket, not an occasional premium indulgence.
