Prolific favors trust over scale

Prolific is choosing to win on trust, not volume. In practice that means a researcher or AI team can filter for hundreds of traits, launch a study in minutes, and get responses from an ID verified pool that Prolific has years of history on, while MTurk is built more like an open task exchange where most work is visible to the broad marketplace and requesters do more of the screening themselves. That trade gives Prolific cleaner data and faster confidence, but a narrower supply base and fewer task types than MTurk.

Prolific has built the product around profiling and verification. It reports 200,000 active vetted participants, 300 plus filters, fraud detection, and a workflow where participants often complete tasks in external survey or AI eval tools, then return for payment. That is very different from MTurk's core HIT marketplace, which is designed to host almost any microtask category at broad scale.

The economic tradeoff is clear. MTurk has long been the low cost option for raw labor, but recent academic work still finds severe fraud risk in some survey use cases even after screening. Prolific is explicitly built to reduce that risk, and CloudResearch Connect has moved into the same quality focused lane with reputation features and a 25% researcher fee.

This also explains why Prolific overlaps with, but does not fully replace, MTurk. MTurk can absorb a wider mix of labeling, classification, transcription, and general internet tasks because it is a huge open market. Prolific is strongest when the buyer cares about who the human is, not just whether a task gets completed cheaply.
The market is moving toward higher value human input, where authenticity, cultural fit, and repeatable quality matter more than raw headcount. That favors Prolific in AI evaluation, safety, and specialized research, while MTurk remains the default reservoir for buyers optimizing first for scale, variety, and price.
