Crusoe pivots to AI cloud
Crusoe
This sale turns Crusoe from a mixed business into a focused AI infrastructure company, which makes its capital, operations, and customer story much simpler. Until 2024, crypto mining was still about 55% of revenue, while AI cloud was the faster growing piece at about $124M and up 460% YoY. Exiting mining lets Crusoe direct power, GPUs, financing, and hiring toward long duration AI contracts, large data center builds, and cloud services for customers like Microsoft and Databricks.1 2 3 4 5
- The mining business was not a side project. Crusoe had built its original advantage around stranded gas, modular data centers, and oilfield deployment. NYDIG agreed to buy that operation, including Digital Flare Mitigation, with about 135 employees transferring, which shows Crusoe was carving out a full operating division, not just trimming exposure.2 5
- The strategic trade is clear. Bitcoin mining converts cheap power into a volatile commodity. AI cloud converts that same power into contracted compute revenue. Crusoe projected nearly $887M of 2025 revenue from AI cloud versus about $100M from crypto mining, and tied its next phase to Abilene, where it is building large scale capacity that Oracle can operate for OpenAI related demand.1 4 6 7
- This also moves Crusoe closer to the CoreWeave playbook and away from more broker style GPU clouds like Fluidstack. CoreWeave and Crusoe both spend heavily to control data centers and lock in large customers on multi year infrastructure deals, while Fluidstack built earlier growth by matching customers to third party capacity and then upselling dedicated private cloud.1 3 4
From here, Crusoe looks less like an energy tech company with a mining heritage and more like a new AI utility. The next leg is bigger campuses, more leased and reserved compute, and a tighter connection between power sourcing, data center construction, and cloud software. If execution holds, the company should keep shifting revenue mix and valuation toward pure play AI infrastructure peers.1 4 6 7
