Default Entry Points Determine Winners
Wrtn
This is a fight over default user entry points, not over who can build one more writing feature. Wrtn’s free app works as a funnel only if users open it first for everyday prompts, search, and learning. Google and OpenAI are making that harder by baking memory, project context, voice, camera, and app actions into assistants that already sit on billions of phones and browsers, so habit formation shifts upstream before Wrtn can route users into Crack or OOC.

Gemini’s edge is placement plus breadth. Google said the Gemini app passed 1 billion monthly users in August 2026, with voice use rising, camera and screen sharing used in live sessions, and actions across 40 plus apps. That means writing help is bundled into a broader daily assistant loop, not sold as a standalone destination.

ChatGPT is moving in the same direction. OpenAI’s memory system now carries forward preferences, projects, and constraints, and project memory keeps long running work in one persistent workspace. For a user drafting, studying, or planning every day, that reduces the reason to switch into a separate utility app just to regain context.

Wrtn’s monetization still depends on pulling users out of generic utility and into more specialized surfaces. Internal coverage shows Crack became the revenue inflection after paid character chat launched in late 2024, and Crack’s support materials describe OOC as direct instruction to the AI system. That makes top of funnel control unusually important, because the free layer has to feed paid mode adoption.
The next phase is likely to reward companies that own a distinctive destination, not just a competent assistant. Global assistants will keep absorbing generic writing, search, and study tasks by default. Wrtn’s path is to make Crack and OOC strong enough that users cross ecosystems on purpose, because they want a specific experience they cannot get from the phone level assistant.
