The hard part in BI is not building charts, it is escaping the procurement gravity of the software bundle a customer already owns. Microsoft can make Power BI feel free because Power BI Pro is included in Microsoft 365 E5 and Office 365 E5, while the basic desktop product is free, so an IT team can standardize on it without opening a new vendor review. That forces standalone vendors like Sigma to win on speed, usability, and live warehouse workflows, not on seat price.

  • Power BI benefits from the fact that many enterprises already buy Microsoft in bulk. Microsoft lists Power BI Pro at $14 per user per month, but also states it is included in Microsoft 365 E5 and Office 365 E5, which drives the incremental buyer conversation toward zero for many knowledge workers.
  • Tableau and Looker have similar parent company leverage, but through different doors. Salesforce completed its Tableau acquisition in August 2019, and Google completed its Looker acquisition in February 2020. That lets each product ride a much larger field sales machine and get packaged into CRM or cloud commitments already under negotiation.
  • Sigma is attacking the part of the workflow where incumbent BI often breaks down for business users. Sigma runs on live warehouse data and presents it in a spreadsheet style grid, while older BI setups often require a semantic layer and extra modeling work before a metric is usable across the business. That makes Sigma easier to justify when teams want direct exploration instead of waiting on analysts.

This pushes the category toward two layers. Bundled BI will remain the default reporting layer inside large software suites, while products like Sigma compete to become the working surface where teams actually investigate numbers, build analyses, and operate on live warehouse data. The vendors that replace spreadsheet and analyst back and forth, not the cheapest dashboard tool, are the ones most likely to keep winning budget.
