SPAN as Home Energy Control Layer
SPAN
SPAN wins if the breaker box becomes the home’s operating system, not just a premium hardware swap. The panel already sees every major load, can turn circuits on and off, and can keep a house under a fixed service limit, which makes it the natural place to coordinate EV charging, battery backup, heat pumps, and utility demand control from one layer instead of through separate device apps and control boxes.
-
The builder opportunity is much bigger than retrofit because the value is avoiding expensive service upgrades at design time. SPAN says its expanded panel family can save builders $3,000 to $10,000 per site by avoiding 400A service, which turns the product from a luxury add on into cost saving infrastructure for all electric homes.
-
The utility and grid services path comes from moving control closer to the meter. SPAN Edge is sold to utilities, lets them set dynamic service limits during peak events, and uses the same PowerUp load management logic, which means the company can sell not just a homeowner panel but a utility managed control point at the grid edge.
-
The risk is that batteries are growing their own control layers. Tesla pairs Powerwall with Backup Switch for whole home backup and monitoring, and Enphase can shed selected loads based on battery state of charge, so SPAN has to prove its circuit by circuit control is meaningfully better than battery bundled controls that may come effectively free with storage installs.
The next step is a shift from selling single panels to owning the rules engine for electrified homes. If SPAN keeps getting specified by builders, embedded by utilities, and extended into adjacent devices like EV charging, its control software can become the common layer that decides how limited household power gets allocated as more homes add large electric loads.
