Celtic’s Embedded Lending Model
Celtic Bank
Celtic’s edge is not that it became a bigger traditional bank, it turned itself into a high throughput lending factory for other companies’ demand. Instead of waiting for borrowers to walk into branches, Celtic plugs into fintechs and referral channels that bring a steady stream of applications, while the bank keeps the regulated jobs of origination, underwriting, and compliance. That lets a small balance sheet support far more loan flow than a branch based bank with similar assets.1 2 3 4 5
- The clearest proof is scale through partners. Celtic says its partnership programs have produced $24B+ in partner loan and credit fundings, 3M+ unique loan transactions, and 2.1M+ active credit cards. That is distribution volume no local commercial bank builds branch by branch.2
- The operating model is narrow and specialized. Internal research on BaaS banks describes sponsor banks like Celtic as the regulated layer, while fintechs own customer acquisition and servicing. Bond also points to Celtic as a bank that helped programs for Square and Square Capital scale, showing how volume comes from embedded channels, not storefront banking.3 4
- Comparable banks show what Celtic is and is not. Cross River runs a broader API bank with deposits, cards, payments, and lending across 80+ fintech partners, while research on Cross River describes Celtic as more lending focused, more willing to hold loans longer, and particularly strong in SBA. Celtic’s own site says it has ranked top 10 nationally in SBA lending every year since 2013.5 1
The next step is deeper embedded lending, where more software companies and finance apps treat Celtic as the regulated engine behind white labeled credit. As underwriting, servicing, and compliance get packaged into partner workflows, the banks that win will be the ones that can turn outside demand into repeatable origination volume without adding the cost base of a national branch network.2 3 4 5
