OpenAI is no longer mainly a consumer chat app with an API attached, it is becoming an enterprise software company where seat sales and agent usage inside large organizations drive the core business. That matters because enterprise revenue is stickier, expands account by account, and gives OpenAI a direct channel to bundle ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Work, Codex, and API credits into one budget owned by IT and business teams, not just individual users.1 2

  • OpenAI has built the product stack to sell into companies at multiple levels, from per seat Business and Enterprise plans to usage based overages for Codex and agent workflows. More than 9M paying business users as of February 2026 and more than 1M organizations using its technology by December 2025 show that enterprise is not a side business, it is the distribution engine for newer products.1
  • The coding product is a big reason the mix is shifting. Codex lets developers describe a task, then reads the codebase, edits files, runs tests, and prepares changes for review. Cloud agents let that work continue in parallel off the user’s machine, which means revenue can grow with hours of agent work and token usage, not just with seat count.1 4
  • This also changes the competitive fight with Anthropic. Anthropic gained early momentum with enterprise oriented products like Claude Code, but OpenAI has responded by reallocating GPUs toward coding and enterprise, bundling Codex into existing enterprise relationships, and using ChatGPT as the top of funnel for broader workplace adoption.1 3 4

From here, the enterprise share should keep rising as OpenAI turns chat into a work surface and coding into a high consumption workflow. The company is moving toward a model where the winning account buys seats first, then layers on agents, automation, and API usage across departments, making each enterprise customer worth far more over time.1 4
