Commure building Epic alternative through M&A
Commure
Commure is using M&A to buy distribution and product wedges that would take years to build inside hospital workflows. PatientKeeper brought a foothold inside HCA and physician mobile workflow. Strongline added staff safety. Augmedix added ambient documentation and medical scribe revenue. That matters because hospital software grows less by adding seats and more by selling one more module into an account that is already live across clinics, floors, and billing teams.1 2 3 4 5 6
- The pattern goes back to Commure’s early roll up strategy. Prior research links the company to acquisitions including ListRunner, Merlin, Karuna Health, PatientKeeper, Strongline, and Augmedix, each filling a specific hospital workflow instead of expanding a single product line.1 2 5
- PatientKeeper was especially strategic because it came out of HCA’s own software stack as part of the 2021 HCA and General Catalyst partnership. That turned an acquisition into a channel relationship with one of the largest US health systems, not just a product purchase.5 7
- Augmedix shows what supplementing growth looks like in practice. Commure announced the deal in July 2024 and closed it in October 2024. Soon after, HCA selected Commure as its exclusive ambient AI partner, giving Commure a way to bundle documentation AI into a broader hospital software sale.3 4 8
Going forward, Commure is likely to keep buying products that already sit in a hospital workflow, then use its installed base to cross sell them across revenue cycle, clinician workflow, and AI documentation. The end state is a broader hospital operating stack that looks less like a point solution vendor and more like a credible Epic alternative around the edges.1 2 6 8
