Freed Must Become Workflow Platform
Freed
Freed’s real challenge is shifting from a cheap note tool to a workflow system that saves money or makes money after the note is done. Basic ambient documentation is being folded into free clinician apps like Doximity Scribe and into the EHR itself through Epic AI Charting, while larger rivals like Abridge sell deeper integrations that write notes, surface codes, and fit directly into hospital workflows. For Freed, retention increasingly depends on whether search, coding, pre charting, and reception become daily habits rather than add ons.1 2 3 4 5 6
- Freed’s original edge was speed and low friction. It sold a $99 per month self serve scribe to individual clinicians and small practices, reaching an estimated $19M ARR and 17,000 clinicians by March 2025. That motion works when the buyer is the doctor, but it also caps expansion because small practices have few seats and many different EHRs.1 2 3
- Enterprise players are selling a bigger outcome than note drafting. Abridge is priced around $500 per clinician per month, expanded from about 8,000 to 60,000 plus clinicians across 100 plus health systems, and uses Epic and Athenahealth distribution plus deeper workflow integration to auto produce billing ready notes and surface codes inside the care workflow.3 4
- Free and bundled products change the buying test from can this write a note to what extra work disappears next. Doximity offers free Scribe to verified U.S. clinicians, and Epic says AI Charting drafts notes and queues orders inside Epic. In that world, Freed needs adjacent products that reduce front desk labor, coding mistakes, or chart prep time enough to justify a separate subscription.5 6 4
The next phase of this market belongs to products that own more of the visit workflow after the transcript is created. Freed is heading in the right direction by moving into pre charting, coding, and reception. If those products reliably cut admin work across the whole clinic day, Freed can stay valuable even as note generation itself becomes table stakes.2 4
