OpenRouter’s growth shows that model routing has become a high volume utility layer, not a nice to have developer tool. The jump from roughly $19M annualized revenue at the end of 2025 to $50M in March 2026, $140M in July, and $160M in August maps to a business that takes a small fee on a rapidly expanding river of inference spend. As more apps use multiple models, the company sits in the payment flow every time a request is routed, billed, or failed over.1 2 3 4

  • The product is concrete. A developer plugs into one OpenAI compatible endpoint instead of wiring up separate APIs for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and open source hosts. OpenRouter then handles model switching, provider failover, usage analytics, and one bill, while collecting about 5% on customer spend.2 4
  • The speed of monetization comes from usage growth, not seat expansion. OpenRouter processed about $100M in annualized inference spend by May 2025, reached 3T plus tokens per day across 8M developers by May 2026, and then benefited again as Chinese open source models grew to more than half of usage, pushing token volume sharply higher even while revenue per token fell.2 3 4
  • The best comparables are other universal APIs. Plaid reached $390M ARR in 2024 and $546M in 2025 by taking a cut of financial data access. Recall.ai went from $8M ARR in 2024 to about $31M by February 2026 in meeting bots. OpenRouter reached a much steeper curve because AI agents generate far more underlying API calls than a bank login or meeting join.2 5 6

The next phase is OpenRouter turning from a router into the control plane for AI spend. As routing, security, evals, and cost optimization get bundled together, the company is positioned to become default infrastructure for any product that buys model output from many providers and needs to manage margin in real time.2 3 4
