ChatGPT becomes productivity workspace
OpenAI
OpenAI is turning ChatGPT from a place that answers questions into a place where office work gets done end to end. Work mode now creates and edits documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and analyses, while connected apps pull in outside services and let tasks continue into design, search, shopping, and other workflows. The result is a product that increasingly overlaps with Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and specialized work apps at the interface layer.1 2 3 4
- The product shift is concrete, not conceptual. Work can generate and edit native Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, and the desktop flow supports Microsoft Excel through the ChatGPT for Excel add in. That means the user can stay inside ChatGPT while producing the same file types that normally live in a cloud office suite.1 2
- Connected apps make ChatGPT the front door to other products. OpenAI documents that apps can bring in information, take actions, and use conversation context, with examples like Canva for design and Zillow for search. This changes ChatGPT from a chatbot into a traffic router for work and commerce across third party software.3 4
- The finance push shows where this is heading first. OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Excel and added financial data integrations including FactSet, Dow Jones Factiva, LSEG, S&P Global, and Moody’s, then packaged a financial services version of ChatGPT Work. That looks less like a single assistant feature and more like a vertical productivity stack for high value knowledge work.2 5 6
The next step is a single workspace where chat, file creation, connected apps, and domain data all sit behind one prompt box. As OpenAI keeps merging Chat, Work, and app actions, the competitive fight shifts from best model to who owns the daily work surface where people draft, analyze, approve, and transact.1 3 5 6
