Kraken fully verticalized its xStocks platform

Verticalizing xStocks turns Kraken from a distributor of tokenized stocks into the owner of the whole machine. Before the Backed deal, Kraken had the customer, the order flow, and the app, while Backed handled issuance of the stock linked tokens. After the acquisition, Kraken controlled issuance, trading, and settlement together, which means it can launch new equities faster, keep more of the economics, and plug xStocks directly into derivatives and onchain use cases.1 2 3 4

  • The workflow is unusually concrete. Kraken lists the tokenized stock in its app, the token is issued 1:1 against the underlying share, users can trade it on Kraken outside normal stock exchange hours, and then withdraw it to a wallet for onchain use. Owning the issuer removes a separate dependency in that loop.2 4 5
  • This is the same logic that made brokerage infrastructure valuable at firms like Alpaca and Apex. The company that owns books, custody, clearing, and settlement captures more revenue per trade and can support more products on top. Kraken is applying that full stack model to tokenized equities instead of plain brokerage APIs.6 7
  • It also shifts Kraken closer to Robinhood than Coinbase. Tokenized stocks give crypto traders another reason to keep cash, collateral, and attention inside one account, then trade spot, futures, and equities without leaving the platform. That increases trading frequency and makes liquidity more self reinforcing.3 8

The next step is turning xStocks into base infrastructure for a 24 hour global market in equities. With Kraken already extending xStocks into perpetual futures, more chains, and more listings, the strategic prize is not just stock trading fees, but becoming the venue where tokenized equities are issued, financed, margined, and reused across trading and DeFi.1 4 5
