Agentless and Sensor Hybrid Approach

Diving deeper into

Upwind

Company Report
The central contest is deployment: agentless scanners connect through cloud APIs in minutes but assess workloads from outside, while sensors inside workloads see live behavior but require permission to run on production systems.

This fight is really about who gets trusted onto the machine. Agentless vendors win the first meeting because a cloud admin can connect AWS, Azure, or GCP with read only access and start surfacing misconfigurations, exposed storage, risky IAM, and vulnerable images in minutes. Sensor based vendors win when buyers need to see what a workload actually does after it starts running, like new processes, network calls, shell activity, or data leaving the system.1 2 3 4 5

  • Upwind is pushing a hybrid path. It can start with agentless coverage, then add an in cluster scanner and production sensor so findings from posture scans can be checked against live runtime behavior. That matters because many cloud risks never turn into active attack paths, while some dangerous behavior never appears in static scans at all.2 5
  • Wiz built the category around fast, read only deployment. Its model is to query cloud APIs, inspect metadata, and scan snapshots or images without logging into the workload. That makes rollout easy across large estates, but it mainly answers what exists and what looks risky, not what a container is doing right now.3 6 7
  • Sysdig shows the tradeoff from the other side. Its agent can enforce runtime policy and collect live security events from hosts, but installation takes more operational work and results arrive on different cadences for agent based and agentless scans. In practice, this means deeper visibility usually comes with a longer approval and rollout cycle.4 8 9

The market is moving toward mixed deployment rather than a single winner. Agentless will remain the easiest wedge into an account, but more spending will shift to vendors that can prove which risks are active in production and stop live attacks. That favors platforms like Upwind that use fast connection to land, then sensors to deepen value and retention.1 2 3 5
