Retrofit autonomy for mixed fleets

OEM agnosticism turns autonomy from a capital project into a service sale. Instead of asking a mine to replace a working fleet, Pronto can add cameras, control hardware, communications gear, and drive by wire to trucks already on site, which cuts the budget hurdle and speeds deployment. That matters in mining, where fleets are mixed, trucks stay in service for years, and operators want more tons moved without waiting for a full equipment refresh.

Komatsu and Pronto market a system for existing quarry trucks and mixed OEM fleets, while Pronto says its platform can retrofit any haul truck and learns routes after one manual drive, so autonomy can be layered onto current operations instead of requiring a greenfield rebuild.

• This also broadens the customer base beyond top tier miners. Caterpillar's MineStar Command has been proven at scale for years, but it is associated with Caterpillar's own ecosystem. Pronto is aiming at quarries and smaller or mixed fleets where the blocker is often infrastructure cost and fleet replacement, not interest in autonomy itself.

Bell was an early route to commercial trucks with autonomy built in, Komatsu now offers Pronto for North American quarry trucks, and Hitachi announced an open mine automation partnership in July 2026. Each relationship expands distribution without forcing Pronto into a single truck brand.

The likely next step is that autonomous haulage spreads first where replacement budgets are tight and fleets are mixed, then moves up into larger mine classes as retrofit kits and dealer channels mature. That makes the winner less likely to be the truck maker with the biggest installed base alone, and more likely to be the autonomy layer that can ride across all of them.
