Bilt turning rent into travel spend
Bilt
Bilt is turning rent from a single monthly earning moment into a broader consumer wallet that can follow members into restaurants, hotels, and trips. The logic is simple. Housing gives Bilt a recurring place to start the relationship, then travel and hospitality give it many more places to monetize points redemption, merchant offers, and booking volume. Sion adds advisor and hotel distribution, while Bilt already has travel transfers, a travel portal, and restaurant software to route more of that spend through its network.1 2 3 4 5 6
- Sion matters because it gives Bilt supply, not just demand. The acquisition added infrastructure used by 8,000 plus travel advisors managing $7B in bookings, which means Bilt can plug members into an existing hotel and advisor channel instead of building hotel distribution from scratch.1 2
- Bilt already trained members to think of rent points as travel currency. Members can transfer points to a large set of airline and hotel partners, or book through Bilt Travel across 500 plus airlines and 700,000 hotel properties. That makes hotel and trip offers feel like a native extension of the product, not a category leap.3 4 5
- The restaurant piece closes the loop on local discretionary spend. Bilt Dining sells software and concierge tools to restaurant operators, while Home Away from Home connected Bilt members with hotel stays through travel advisors. Together, that starts to look like a housing anchored version of a lifestyle loyalty network, with rent as the onramp and travel, dining, and hotels as higher frequency spend categories.6 7
The next phase is Bilt pushing further from rewards into transaction capture. If more members redeem points on trips, book hotels through advisor channels, and use dining perks in network venues, Bilt moves from being a rent rewards program to a commerce layer around where people live, eat, and travel. That expands both take rate opportunities and merchant leverage.1 3 6 7
