Confluence Opens to Third-Party Agents
Notion
This shows the battle is shifting from who has the best editor to who becomes the control layer where outside agents can read company context and take action. Notion made that move in May 2026 by letting teams register external agents and trigger them across connected tools. Atlassian is now doing the same inside Confluence, using Rovo to turn docs into a launch point for partner agents like Lovable, Replit, and Gamma.1 2 3 4
- Notion’s May 13, 2026 developer platform launch added an External Agent API, so an internally built or third party agent can appear inside the workspace like another teammate. That matters because Notion is no longer just storing notes and databases, it is becoming the place where agent work is initiated and governed.1 2
- Atlassian’s April 8, 2026 Confluence launch does the same thing in a more workflow specific way. A team can take a Confluence page, hand it to Lovable or Replit to generate a prototype or starter app, or send it to Gamma to turn it into a presentation, without manual copy and paste.3 4
- Atlassian pairs this with aggressive bundling. Rovo was rolled out to all paying cloud customers at no extra cost, and Atlassian said Rovo agents appeared in 2.4 million business workflows in six months. That raises the competitive pressure on Notion, which prices Custom Agent usage separately through credits starting May 4, 2026.2 5 6
The next step is that knowledge tools stop being endpoints and become agent hubs. Notion, Confluence, and similar products will compete on permissions, context, and orchestration. The winner is likely the platform that can let many outside agents operate safely on company data while making that access feel native and cheap enough to use every day.1 3 5
