Supabase: speed versus enterprise trust

Founding engineer at healthtech startup on Supabase's ready-at-scale credibility gap

Interview
if the business model is that people adopt it for speed, grow quickly, and then never find time to migrate off—so they stay—I wouldn't bet on that as a long-term model

The real risk is not churn from tiny hobby apps, it is whether Supabase can keep winning once customers become capable of rebuilding its convenience layer themselves. The product is strongest when a team wants Postgres, auth, storage, and APIs working in one afternoon. That creates fast adoption and strong early monetization, but it also means the long term defense has to come from operational trust and enterprise depth, not from customers being too busy to leave.

  • This interview draws a sharp line between side projects and serious systems. For simple apps, Supabase saves the day zero work of wiring up a database, auth, and storage. For a healthtech team with tighter control and compliance needs, Aurora Postgres felt manageable enough that the convenience premium was not worth the migration and vendor risk.
  • Supabase monetizes more than raw database hosting. Its billing layers in MAU for auth, usage based database and storage charges, egress, realtime, and functions, which makes the bundle economically stronger as an app grows. That also raises the cost of switching, because data, users, files, and policies are tied together across one project.
  • The strongest comparison here is Temporal. It earns ready at scale credibility from being born out of Uber's Cadence project and from visible production adoption at companies like Snap, Box, Coinbase, Nvidia, and Alaska Airlines. That is the kind of proof enterprise infra buyers look for before paying premium prices to outsource a core system.

Where this heads next is a split market. Supabase can keep compounding with AI generated apps and small teams that value speed over control, but its biggest upside comes from proving that the bundled layer is not just faster to start, it is still the best place to stay at scale. If it clears that credibility bar, pricing power expands sharply.
