DeepMind Mints Repeat AI Founders

Diving deeper into

The state of European venture

The other really big theme from the past, let's say 12 months, is DeepMind.

DeepMind matters because it turned London from a place that trained great AI researchers into a place that can now mint repeat founders. In European venture, that is the jump from having talent to having a talent flywheel. Once a lab produces people who have worked on frontier models, infrastructure, and research teams at global scale, those people become the seed for new startups, new angel networks, and new technical hiring clusters across the region.

  • DeepMind was founded in London in 2010, and London remains a major research base. That gives Europe a local anchor for frontier AI talent, instead of depending only on imported talent or university labs.
  • The first wave of spinouts is already visible. Isomorphic Labs was launched out of DeepMind around AlphaFold, and Mistral AI was founded by researchers with DeepMind and Meta backgrounds. That shows the spillover is not just hiring noise, it is company formation.
  • This is similar to what Klarna, Revolut, and Monzo did for fintech. Operating companies train people on real products, recruiting, and go to market. DeepMind does the same for frontier AI, but with rarer technical talent that investors chase even more aggressively.

The next phase is a thicker European AI stack built by former lab researchers, not just another batch of app startups. That should produce more model companies, drug discovery platforms, developer tools, and infrastructure startups, with London acting as the main node and other European hubs absorbing the spillover.
