Betterment Custom Portfolios Retention Strategy

Diving deeper into

Betterment

Company Report
Sitting between these two modes is Custom Portfolios (launched August 2026), a managed account option where customers can start from a Betterment model portfolio or build from scratch across 5,500+ stocks and ETFs

Custom Portfolios is Betterment’s clearest move to stop losing ambitious customers at the exact moment their balances get large enough to matter. It lets someone keep Betterment’s automation, rebalancing, dividend reinvestment, tax loss harvesting, and tax previews, while choosing the actual stocks and ETFs themselves. That matters because robo advisors are most vulnerable when customers want more control but do not want to leave the managed workflow entirely.1 2 3 4

  • This is less a brand new behavior than a product upgrade path. Betterment moved Flexible Portfolios into the refreshed Custom Portfolio architecture starting August 3, 2026, beginning with taxable accounts, which shows the company was extending an existing customization layer rather than abandoning automation for pure brokerage.2 5
  • The real product difference versus self directed trading is that Betterment still runs the account. In self directed accounts it waives the wrap fee, but in Custom Portfolios it keeps managed account features like tax loss harvesting and Tax Impact Preview, and warns that changing holdings can reduce the effectiveness of those tax features versus the default core portfolio.2 4 6 7
  • The closest comparable is Wealthfront’s direct indexing stack. Wealthfront uses individual stocks inside managed portfolios, especially above $100,000, to improve tax loss harvesting. Betterment’s version is broader in security choice, 5,500 plus stocks and ETFs, but the same strategic goal is visible, keep higher AUM customers inside a managed, fee paying account instead of letting them drift to Robinhood style stock picking.3 8 9 10

The next step is a richer managed account ladder, where Betterment uses Custom Portfolios, direct indexing from Rowboat, and wider account type support to make customization a retention engine for larger taxable balances. That pushes the company toward the center of the market, between simple robo allocation and full DIY brokerage, where customer assets are stickier and management fees last longer.1 3
