Gong Augments Rather Than Replaces CRM
Aurasell
Gong’s ceiling is shaped by the fact that it sits on top of the CRM database instead of owning it. Gong is strongest when it turns calls, emails, and meetings into better forecasts, coaching, and engagement workflows, but the account, contact, and opportunity records that trigger planning, approvals, and reporting still live in Salesforce or Microsoft Dynamics for many customers. That makes Gong a high value intelligence layer, not the operational home base.
-
Gong is deeply wired into CRM rather than built to replace it. Its CRM integrations export captured activities into CRM objects, and its Forecast product requires an in place CRM integration with Salesforce, HubSpot, or Dynamics. That setup works because Gong enriches deal records with call based signals, while the CRM remains the place teams update and govern core pipeline data.
-
That split explains Gong’s product expansion. At roughly $300M ARR and about 4,500 customers, growth has come from selling Forecast and Engage on top of its conversation data engine, with 25% of customers buying multiple products. Gong wins by making unstructured customer interactions usable across the revenue stack, not by migrating the company’s entire sales database into a new CRM.

Aurasell and Attio are pushing from the opposite direction. Both are trying to be the database and workflow layer itself, with custom objects, unified customer graphs, and native automation built into the CRM core. ServiceNow is taking yet another path, using CRM to connect sales, fulfillment, and service workflows on one platform, with $1.4B of CRM ACV at year end 2024.
The market is moving toward fewer disconnected sales tools and more AI systems that can both reason over conversations and write back into core records. If Gong can keep expanding as the intelligence layer across Salesforce and Microsoft estates, it remains a major platform. If buyers increasingly want one system to store the record and run the workflow, the advantage shifts toward CRM rebuilders like Aurasell and Attio.
