Data vendors monetizing via AI assistants

This is a distribution defense as much as a product strategy. When FactSet, S&P Capital IQ, Morningstar, and similar data vendors plug their licensed datasets into ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity, they keep their content in the analyst workflow even if the front end shifts away from the terminal. That lets them earn from the same data twice, once in their own product, and again through API, app, and partner channels inside the horizontal AI tools people already open first.1 2 3 4 5 6

• For the incumbent data vendor, the practical move is simple. Instead of forcing a user to log into a separate workstation, they let the user ask a question in ChatGPT or Claude, then return licensed FactSet, S&P, Morningstar, or PitchBook content with source links. That makes the dataset the product, and the chatbot just the window.1 3 4 5 6
• This also buys time against AlphaSense. AlphaSense wins when customers want one destination built around unstructured finance documents, expert calls, and analyst style synthesis. But FactSet has been building Mercury as both a conversational interface and an API, specifically so clients can pull FactSet data and AI into their own tools and internal systems.2 7
• The monetization path is not just seat expansion. Morningstar has said these AI integrations can broaden access, support client AI strategies, and create new pricing and trial models. That points to a world where a customer may never buy the full terminal first, but still pays for slices of premium content inside an AI assistant.4 5

Over time, the winners will be the vendors whose data shows up wherever finance work happens, in terminals, spreadsheets, internal apps, and general AI assistants. Horizontal AI will own more of the interface, but the companies that control trusted financial content, entitlements, and source linked answers will keep the economics and stay hard to displace.1 2 3 4 5 6 7
