AI Agents Sacrifice Trust for Checkout

The key tradeoff is that AI shopping products can make checkout feel magical only by cutting away the messy details that make shopping trustworthy. To support instant purchase inside the chat, the system has to keep merchant catalog data, prices, stock, shipping, returns, and fraud checks in sync. When that plumbing is incomplete, the product usually narrows merchant coverage, reduces comparison depth, or hands off fewer choices, which makes the experience simpler for the machine but weaker for the shopper.

  • Vetted is built around the idea that research is the hard part and checkout should stay with the merchant until the product, variant, and delivery details are nailed down. In practice that means sending high intent traffic to a store that already knows the exact SKU and can verify shipping and availability before the order is placed.
  • This is different from the classic one click checkout play. Bolt and Rally improve conversion after a shopper has already chosen a cart, payment method, and merchant. AI shopping agents are trying to solve a much earlier problem, which includes product selection, merchant ranking, and live catalog accuracy, not just payment form filling.
  • The market is now rebuilding the stack around this bottleneck. Stripe has rolled out agentic commerce tooling and an open protocol for instant checkout, and PayPal has launched agentic commerce services tied to discovery platforms like Perplexity. That shows the missing piece is not recommendation quality alone, it is reliable transaction infrastructure.

The next phase is a split market. Specialist shopping products will keep winning on comparison, nuance, and trust during research, while payment and commerce infrastructure companies standardize the pipes that let agents buy safely. As those rails mature, the best shopping agents will add native checkout without giving up the rich comparison interface that shoppers still need.
