This structure turns each home battery into both a customer acquisition tool and a grid trading asset. In ERCOT, Base is not just installing backup power, it is also becoming the household’s electricity provider and using the same battery fleet to buy power low, sell power to homes at fixed rates, and discharge into the grid when 15 minute prices spike. That stacked model is what makes a sub $1,000 entry price economically possible.

  • The key difference from a normal battery installer is ownership and control. Base keeps the battery on its own balance sheet, signs the customer to a 36 month power contract, and manages charging remotely. Lease fees alone would take more than 20 years to recover install cost, so the real payback comes from retail margin and wholesale dispatch revenue together.
  • ERCOT is unusually well suited to this because Texas has retail choice and direct exposure to a competitive wholesale market. ERCOT administers retail switching for more than 8 million premises in competitive areas, and its battery heavy market structure creates frequent price windows where stored power is worth much more than off peak charging energy.
  • The closest large scale analog is Tesla, which in Texas also combines a retail electricity plan with Powerwall based virtual power plant participation. The difference is packaging. Tesla generally sells the hardware first and then layers grid programs on top, while Base uses cheap upfront pricing and retained ownership to make the battery itself the wedge into the retail power account.

Going forward, the gentailer model points to a race to control the full household energy stack. If Base keeps scaling inside ERCOT, the company gains not just more battery megawatts, but more retail accounts, more dispatchable capacity, and more leverage to expand into solar, EV charging, and other home energy products that make each household more valuable over time.
