The key issue is that the company that owns the mission kit often ends up owning the military aircraft. JetZero can design the blended wing body airframe, but defense variants will be defined by who integrates the refueling hardware, sensors, communications, electronic warfare, and battle management systems that make the plane usable on real missions. Northrop Grumman is already positioned on both sides of that stack through Scaled Composites building Jet1 and its mission systems business supporting the program.

  • This is how primes capture value on modified aircraft programs. Northrop markets special mission aircraft by taking customer preferred airframes and adding ISR sensors, fire control gear, and other mission equipment. In the Navy E-130J program, Lockheed builds the base C-130J air vehicle while Northrop serves as prime for TACAMO mission systems integration.
  • JetZero already has a coopetition structure that could tilt further toward the prime. Northrop says Scaled Composites is designing and building the full scale demonstrator, and that the company will also contribute mission systems integration and rapid prototyping. If military demand grows from one demonstrator into a tanker, cargo, or ISR family, that integration role becomes the leverage point.

Those companies sell tightly bundled hardware and software systems, not just parts, and have scaled to roughly $2.2B and $300M in latest estimated revenue respectively. A military BWB market would be large enough to attract the same fight over who controls the full system, not just the airframe shell.

If blended wing body aircraft become a real defense category, the winners will be the companies that pair novel airframes with trusted mission integration. That points toward a future where JetZero either grows upstream into military systems ownership, or becomes the aerodynamic core inside prime led tanker, transport, and special mission programs.
