Hark is copying that logic without OpenAI's built in distribution.

OpenAI has already moved far beyond a chatbot. Its recent product and strategy framing ties together consumer and enterprise products, custom inference chips, and AI native devices, which is exactly the shape of a vertically integrated platform rather than a single app.

The practical reason to go lower in the stack is access. An app level assistant can only act through narrow hooks exposed by other apps. An OS level or device level product can observe behavior across email, calendar, maps, rideshare, and browser sessions, then turn that context into actions.

The closest public comparable in product direction is Perplexity, which used an Android assistant and phone distribution deal to get closer to the default interface layer. But Perplexity stayed model agnostic, while OpenAI is integrating model, product, silicon, and device, which is the more direct template for Hark.
The next phase is a race to become the default personal computing layer before Apple, Google, and OpenAI fully close the gap. If Hark can ship a tight hardware and software loop while the biggest labs are still coordinating devices, operating systems, and app ecosystems, it can carve out a real foothold before bundling advantages take over.
