Crusoe Shifts GPUs From Crypto to AI

Diving deeper into

Crusoe

Company Report
With this shift, Crusoe pivoted their GPU infrastructure and expertise from crypto mining to AI cloud services

The pivot turned Crusoe from an energy arbitrage business into a compute supplier for the hottest bottleneck in AI. The same skill set that mattered in bitcoin mining, finding cheap power, packing GPUs into modular sites, and operating them reliably in remote locations, translated directly into renting H100 and A100 clusters to model builders. By 2024, AI cloud was already 45% of revenue, growing 460% year over year, which shows the new business was scaling much faster than mining.1 2 3 4 5

  • Operationally, the product changed more than the hardware. Instead of hashing bitcoin, Crusoe began selling GPU instances, high speed InfiniBand networking, and AI training capacity through Crusoe Cloud, with HPE designed H100 supercomputer systems coming online in October 2023.4 6 7
  • The closest comparable is CoreWeave, which also started in crypto and repurposed GPU fleets for AI. The difference is cost structure. CoreWeave scaled faster with leased data centers and heavy debt, while Crusoe leaned on self built sites near cheap energy, which required more upfront capital but offered lower long run power costs.2 3 8
  • The NYDIG transaction completed the strategic break. Crusoe announced the planned sale of its bitcoin mining and Digital Flare Mitigation business in March 2025, moving roughly 135 employees with the business and leaving Crusoe focused on AI cloud, AI data centers, and energy infrastructure for those sites.5 9 10

From here, Crusoe is heading toward becoming a vertically integrated AI infrastructure company, not just a niche GPU renter. The more AI demand shifts from short term GPU scarcity to giant dedicated clusters, the more Crusoe can use its energy first design, in house buildout, and cloud layer to compete for large, multi year workloads rather than opportunistic spot demand.1 2 9 10
