Paycheck routing becomes fintech battleground
Chime
This turns payroll routing into the real battleground for consumer fintech. If Cash App can get a user to send wages straight into the wallet, it becomes the first place money lands, which makes the app stickier, raises card spend, and gives Block a path to serve the same paycheck to paycheck customer Chime was built around, without needing that user to keep a separate checking account as their financial hub.1 2 3 4 5
- Pinwheel is not just reading payroll data, it can write changes to direct deposit settings. Its product lets a user log into their payroll provider inside another app and switch full or partial paycheck allocation in a few clicks, with fallback forms when employers do not support automated switching. That removes one of the biggest onboarding frictions for neobanks and wallets.1 2 6
- For Cash App, direct deposit is the core conversion event because paycheck inflows signal that Cash App is becoming the customer’s primary banking product. Block said it improved this flow by letting users log into their employer or payroll provider in app, and Pinwheel described Cash App as one of its biggest customers and the sole provider driving those direct deposit conversions at scale.3 4 7
- This is the same logic behind Chime’s own model. Chime built around early paycheck access and small dollar everyday spending, and internal research tied lending eligibility to users who had already set up direct deposit, because recurring payroll lowers risk and lifts lifetime value. Cash App using payroll switching means it can copy the same flow of funds advantage from a wallet starting point instead of a bank account starting point.5 8 9
The next phase of competition is less about who has the nicest debit account and more about who controls the paycheck entry point. As payroll switching becomes a standard API layer, Chime, Cash App, payroll apps, and vertical software wallets will all race to capture wages first, then layer on lending, savings, and card spend around that stream of income.4 5 7 8
